David Green (Sr. Vice President, Fellow)

David Green has worked with many organizations to make medical technology and health care services sustainable, affordable and accessible to all. David is a MacArthur Fellow, Ashoka Fellow and is recognized by Schwab Foundation as a leading social entrepreneur. David helped establish Aurolab (India), to produce affordable intraocular lenses (now has 8% of the global market share) and suture. He has helped develop high-volume, quality eye care programs that are affordable to the poor and self-sustaining from user fees, including Aravind Eye Hospital in India – which performs 300,000 surgeries per year – 70 percent of the care is provided free of charge or below – cost, yet the hospital is able to generate substantial surplus revenue. Within this paradigm of ‘humanizing capitalism, he now works as an Ashoka VP (since 2004) to create social investing instruments to support sustainable social enterprises (in eye care and solar energy). He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor in General Studies (1978) and a Masters degree in Public Health (1982). He is the recipient of the 2009 “Spirit of Helen Keller” award for humanitarian efforts in blindness prevention and is the recipient of the 2009 University of Michigan Humanitarian Service Award.

 

Chris Park (Principal)

Chris Park leads Deloitte’s service offerings in sustainability, corporate responsibility, energy and environment. His primary focus is in sustainability strategy, operations, cost reduction, training and policy, performance management and implementation planning.Chris is a registered architect and has served clients in the public sector, life sciences, health care providers, manufacturing, higher education, financial services, nonprofit and retail industries. His recent clients include: United States Postal Service, Kaiser Permanente, Boston Scientific, Rockefeller Foundation, Forest City, Amgen, Biogen and Comerica Bank. Chris holds both a master of business administration degree and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Michigan.

 

Narayan Ramchandran (Senior Advisor, India)

Narayan Ramachandran has recently been appointed as Senior Advisor to Morgan Stanley India, having been Country Head leading all of the Group’s businesses since 2007. Prior to these roles, Narayan was the Head and lead portfolio manager of Morgan Stanley’s Global Emerging Markets and Global Asset Allocation teams, managing over $25 billion in assets. He joined Morgan Stanley in 1996 and has 20 years of investment experience. Before joining the firm, he was a managing director at Rogers Casey (now CRA Rogers Casey). In addition, Narayan was director of research at Rogers Casey and president of its investment advisory subsidiary. He began his career at Goldman Sachs. Narayan has written articles for the academic and trade press, and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences. He received a B.Tech. in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan. Narayan holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He is on the board of several companies. Narayan has a keen interest in using market-based solutions for poverty alleviation in areas such as micro-finance, social venture capital, micro-insurance and affordable housing.

 

Mahendra Ramsinghani (Managing Director of First Step Fund)

Mahendra manages the First Step Fund in Detroit. This fund is focused on micro-investments in pre-seed and seed-stage companies. Mahendra joined the Invest Detroit team with more than a decade of experience in fostering the growth of early-stage technology businesses. Prior to First Step Fund, Mahendra was senior vice president at Plymouth Venture Partners (PVP), and was involved in all aspects of early- and growth-stage investments, including adding value to the existing investment portfolio. In his first 12 months at PVP, he helped double the size of the fund to $21 million, sourced two investments and led a follow-on round capital raise for a portfolio company. Before his tenure with PVP, he was the director, Venture Capital Initiatives for Michigan Economic Development Corp., for seven years. There, he led the legislation for two Fund-of-Fund programs that deploy more than $200 million in Michigan. Mahendra’s background includes a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering and an MBA with a major in marketing and finance.

 

Brian Trelstad (Chief Investment Officer)

Brian Trelstad is the Chief Investment Officer of Acumen Fund, a $60M social investment fund investing in innovative social enterprises in South Asia and East Africa delivering critical health, water, housing and energy services to the base of the pyramid.  He also drives Acumen’s work measuring social and financial return and is a founding executive committee member of the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE).  Prior to Acumen Fund, Brian was a management consultant with McKinsey & Company in their New Jersey office.  He has co-founded and advised several early-stage technology companies and social enterprises and was the lead environmental staffer for President Clinton’s Corporation for National Service.  He is a graduate of Harvard College, Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and the University of California’s College of Environmental Design. Brian is a member of the 2010 class of Henry Crown Fellows at the Aspen Institute. He is also a Kauffman Fellow (Class 12) and was the first impact investor to participate in the fellowship program.

 

Jackie VanderBrug (Managing Director)

Jackie is an entrepreneur with experience in starting and scaling ventures in for-profit and non-profit sectors. As a member of the start up team and Vice President for Business Development of iBasis, she forged relationships with technology leaders such as Cisco and HP to build the now $1B internet telecommunications firm. As co-founder and Executive Director of Work in Progress, a Youth Development program she created relationships with local Universities and employers. She also has been strategy consultant to Fortune 500 firms (with CSC Index), non-profits and foundations (with Criterion Ventures). She began her career as a Programming Analyst for the Congressional Budget Office of the US Congress in matters of domestic social policy. Jackie received an MBA from The University of Michigan, and was at the founding meeting of Students for Responsible Business (now Net Impact).

 

Wes Selke
Wes is Founding Director of the startup accelerator Hub Ventures. Hub Ventures, which is part of the GlobalAccelerator Network championed by TechStars, helps world-changing entrepreneurs build their startups. Wes is also the Investment Manager for Good Capital’s Social Enterprise Expansion Fund, where he leads deal sourcing, due diligence, transaction execution, and portfolio management. He is actively engaged with the portfolio as Chairman of the Board for Alter Eco Americas and as Board Observer for Better World Books and Adina for Life. Wes has ten years of investment management and transaction experience in the financial services industry and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Prior to Good Capital, he spent two years as an Equity Research Associate at William Blair & Company covering the Digital Media Sector, and four years with Ernst & Young Corporate Finance where he advised privately held companies on mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring transactions. Wes earned an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and a BBA from the University of Michigan. Wes joined the Social Venture Fund Board in April 2012.
